SHANNAN, Sept. 2, 2019 (Xinhua) -- Yamdrok Lake with an area of about 590 square km is located in Nagarze County in the city of Shannan, Tibet. It's about 100 kilometers south of the region's capital Lhasa.

Yamdrok Lake along with Lake Namtso and Lake Manasarovar are regarded as the three holy lakes of Tibet.

BEIJING, Aug. 17, 2019 (Xinhua) -- Tibet has seen significant progress in restoring biodiversity, with a forest coverage rate of 12.14 percent, said a white paper released in March this year by China's State Council Information Office.

The population of Tibetan antelopes has grown from 60,000 in the 1990s to more than 200,000 and Tibetan wild donkeys have increased in numbers from 50,000 to 80,000, noted the document, titled "Democratic Reform in Tibet -- Sixty Years On."

Since the Qomolangma Nature Reserve was established in 1988, Tibet has set up 47 nature reserves of all kinds, including 11 at the state level, with the total area of nature reserves accounting for more than 34.35 percent of the total area of the autonomous region, the white paper said. Tibet has 22 eco-protection areas, including one at the state level, 36 counties in receipt of transfer payments from central finance for their key ecological roles, four national scenic areas, nine national forest parks, 22 national wetland parks, and three national parks, figures showed.

The central government has continued to increase eco-compensation for Tibet in return for its cost for protecting the eco-environment and the consequent losses in development opportunities. The white paper said that since 2001, the central government has paid 31.6 billion yuan (4.71 billion U.S. dollars) in eco-compensation to Tibet for protecting forests, grassland, wetland, and key ecological reserves.

Dalai Lama 'deeply sorry' for remarks about women

The Dalai Lama has apologized for controversial comments about the possibility of a woman succeeding him.

Speaking to the BBC last month, the Tibetan spiritual leader had said that any future female Dalai Lama should be "attractive".

But a statement from his office apologized for his words, suggesting it had been a joke.

"He is deeply sorry that people have been hurt by what he said and offers his sincere apologies," it said.

In the interview, the spiritual leader, who is 84 this week, touched on topics including US President Donald Trump, his dreams of returning to Tibet, and refugees.

However, it was his comments on the prospect of a female Dalai Lama that raised eyebrows.

"If a female Dalai Lama comes, she should be more attractive," he said in English while laughing

The statement apologized for any offense caused and put it down to a misunderstood joke.

The Dalai Lama "has a keen sense of the contradictions between the materialistic, globalized world he encounters on his travels and the complex, more esoteric ideas about reincarnation that is at the heart of Tibetan Buddhist tradition", the statement said.

"However, it sometimes happens that the remarks, which might be amusing in one cultural context, lose their humor in translation when brought into another. He regrets any offense that may have been given."

Throughout his life, the Dalai Lama has opposed the objectification of women and supported gender equality, it added.

The statement also said comments in which he said refugees in the European Union should ultimately return home "may have been misinterpreted."

"He certainly appreciates that many of those who leave their countries may not wish or be able to return," it said,

However, there was no apology for his comments on Mr. Trump who, he said, had a "lack of moral principle."
